Highlights
of the Year 2009 |
The period from January to December 2009
has been an eventful one for the Department. Professor Bharati
Baveja completed her term as Head and Dean and
handed over charge to Professor Anita Rampal on
November 3, 2009. 19 December, 2009 marks the completion of 62 years of CIE's existence. During the year, several programmes and activities were undertaken by the
Department. As part of its attempt to reconceptualize
and evolve a new model of teacher education, a draft document, 'Two Year B.Ed.
Programmme: A Conceptual Framework', was developed
by the Faculty of Education. It emerged through a series of
inter-institutional discussions and meetings that spanned more than two
years, and will be, further, strengthened and put into practice under the NCTE
category of an innovative programme on an
experimental basis. The B.Ed. Programme started in
July this year at Shyama Prasad Mukherjee College
for Women, an affiliated college of the University of Delhi. A National Seminar on Science Education
(organized earlier in 2008) led to the development of a forum for
Inter-Institutional partnership for better communication and popularization
of science and technology, with support from the National Council for Science
and Technology Communication (NCSTC), Ministry of Science and Technology. A
National Project on "Enrichment of Resource Material for Science Education
and its Popularization" was launched in September 2009. Coordinated by Dr. Nirupma Jaimini, the project
involves networking with leading science education institutions through a
series of workshops on, 'Enrichment of Science Kits'. A National Seminar titled 'Equity and Education in India: Policy Issues and Challenges', was organized by the Department in March 2009. Coordinated by Dr. D.Parimala, the seminar brought to the forefront several issues and dimensions, thereby contributing to perspective building and policy implications. The six National Projects which were
undertaken at the behest of MHRD have completed the first phase, with
outcomes presented in the form of reports. The UNICEF project entitled 'Status of
Girls Education in Madhya Pradesh', coordinated by Prof. Sadhna
Saxena has been completed and its report would soon
be published. The Regional Resource Centre (RRC) for
Elementary Education is part of the University School Resource Network (USRN)
established to address issues of equity and quality in school education. The
Centre has been very active during the year. Several programmes
and events have been organized which include public lectures, film series and
study sessions. Some teacher fellowships have also been awarded. Professor Poonam Batra is the coordinator
of this centre. Under the UK-India Education and Research
Initiative (UKIERI), a five year project in the area of in-service teacher
education, in collaboration with the Open University (OU) in the UK, the
Department continued its work on the Mentor Scheme in the identified schools
in which teachers were involved in mentoring each other for their ongoing
professional development. At present, the work done in the pilot phase is
being collated by the Project Team. The next phase beginning April 2010, will
see the up scale of this process to, at least, 25 schools in Delhi. With the
help of mentors who are active and can take on the role of Resource Persons,
new mentors will join the scheme. Prof. Rama Mathew is coordinating this
project. The department was visited by several
representatives from different Faculties of Education, such as, the New York
University, USA; University of Augsburg, Germany; University College, Dublin,
Ireland; University of Wales, UK; University of Calgary, Canada; a delegation
from China and most recently a delegation from Taiwan. The purpose of the
visits was to promote academic exchange and explore areas of cooperation
between Delhi University and the respective foreign universities. This year, the Library added 1443 books to
its collection, subscribed to 34 periodicals and enrolled 378 members. Under
the maintenance grant, several books, periodicals and library supplies were
procured. An additional grant under the OBC Grant, was also given by the
University. About 54,000 documents have been recorded in machine readable form. The proposal of 25 workstations and two
printers for our computer lab has been accepted by the university. The
computer lab (equipped with internet facility) has been widely utilised by student teachers, M.Ed,
