Highlights of the Year 2010

 

The year 2010 has been a memorable one. Various activities and programmes were held involving both the students and the faculty members of CIE.

This year's Basu Memorial Lecture was delivered by the noted educationist Prof. David Carr. Other Highlights of the year include a lecture on Reflective Teaching' by Prof. Andrew Pollard, a Lecture on Evolution' by Dr. Karen Haydock and a Lecture-cum-Slide Show on the theme Photographing History' by the eminent photographer Ram Rehman. A drama presentation on Pandita Ramabai, directed by Maya Rao and performed by the Theatre in Education company of NSD, was organized by the Department. A seminar on 'Identity and Rituals in Education' by Prof. Christoph WuIf was organized in the beginning of the session.

A National Workshop was organized in the month of March on International Understanding on Diversity in Higher Educational Institutions with special focus on Teacher Training Programmes'. The participants benefited tremendously from the presence of eminent guests, namely; Mr. Ashok Agarwal, Social Jurist, High Court; Ms. Mira Raj Gambhir, OISE/University of Toronto; Prof. Lakshmi Subramaniam, Jamia Milia Islamia; Prof. Janaki Rajan, Faculty of Education, Jamia Milia Islamia; Dr. T. Geetha, Faculty of Education, University of Delhi, Dr. Parimala V. Rao, Zakir Hussain Centre, Jawaharlal Nehru University; Prof. Bharati Baveja, Faculty of Education, University of Delhi, and Dr. Renu Singh, National Manager, Save the Children New Delhi. The Regional Resource Centre for Elementary Education (RRCEE), as part of the University School Resource Network at Delhi University has completed Phase I and is moving towards Phase II with new thrusts. RRCEE provides diverse platforms for the professional development of teacher practitioners and student-teachers through its various programmes. In the first phase, twenty two teachers have completed their research successfully. Some teacher fellowships have also been awarded. Professor Poonam Batra is the coordinator of this centre.

Under the UK - India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) the Department had taken a five year project in the area of in-service teacher education, in collaboration with the Open University (OU) in the UK. In its Pilot Phase, the project Team has tried out a Mentor Scheme in eleven identified schools in which trained mentors and mentees were involved in mentoring each other for their ongoing professional development. Professor Rama Mathew is the coordinator of this project.

The Students' Panchayat activities are an essential component of the teacher education programme of CIE. To understand the historical and pedagogical relevance of excursions a heritage walk was organized to Qutub Minar and Mehrauli in the month of February. CIE also hosted three Spic Macay programmes.

Representatives from several Faculties of Education visited the Department this year to discuss areas and modalities of collaboration between the two institutions. Some of the institutions represented were the New York University (USA), University of Edinburgh, University of Texas, Arlington, and the School of University of Wales, Newport. The exchange led to meaningful deliberations between the faculties.

CIE faculty members continue to play a significant role is the larger professional community. This year Prof. Krishna Kumar took up the Erasmus Mundus fellowship for three months at the Institute of Education, London.

Our Library has a treasure of old books including valuable reference books. During this year we added 1470 more books to the existing collection. 29 Periodicals including 9 Foreign Periodicals are being subscribed. In this year, approximately 70,000 books have been catalogued in the process of the computerization of library books. The library attracts not only  our scholars, students but also faculty members and scholars from other universities and institutions as well.

The computer lab of the Department, equipped with internet facility is widely utilised by student-teachers, M.Ed,, M.Phil, and Ph.D Scholars. This year the Department upgraded its computer lab with an additional 37 desktop computers and organized a one-day workshop for the lab staff on hardware training in collaboration with the Delhi University Computer Centre.
